In December 2011, seven months before his death, Gore Vidal asked his friend Scotty Bowers to put him in touch with Bob. I did not even know if he was alive or dead, but I wanted to see him one last time. Bob had been his lover in the 60s and, towards the end of his life, Gore Vidal felt an attack of nostalgia, romanticism and curiosity. Or as Scotty Bowers says, “Gore liked Bob because he had been in the navy and had a cock like a baby’s arm.” Bob was a chapero and Scotty was the pimp who, in exchange for a tiny commission of 20 dollars, put him in contact with Vidal in the 50s. Now the documentary Scotty And The Secret History Of Hollywood reveals the list of Bowers VIP clients , “The pimp of the stars”, but he flees from all sordidness, sensationalism or malice: this documentary is presented as an endearing tale of overcoming and freedom.

Scotty Bowers came to Hollywood after fighting at the Battle of Iwo-Jima during World War II, whose experience he told for Vanity Fair. His first job was at the petrol station on the corner of Van Ness Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard where all the film workers were refilling, perhaps the most American place in all of America, and his welcoming smile immediately began to make friends.

“This is how the rumors spread at that time,” Bowers explains of his prosperous hidden business, “no promotional campaign was as effective as picking up a sissy, telling a secret and making him swear not to tell anyone.
