Gringo

Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo) is an innocent man of Nigerian origin to whom everyone sees his face. Plagued by debts and marital problems, Soyink’s only consolation is her work for a major US pharmaceutical company that is marketing a cannabis pill. But this stability collapses when Harold learns that his bosses, Elaine (Charlize Theron) and Richard (Joel Edgerton), have made a secret deal with a Mexican drug dealer called the Black Panther to sell him the pill. However, everything gets complicated when Elaine and Richard decide to sell the company and suddenly cut their business with the Black Panther. When Harold finds out that they have carried this dirty business behind him and that he will soon lose his job, he decides for the first time in his life to take the matter into his own hands and plans a self-kidnapping in Mexico City to collect the insurance from the company and start a new life. But what he does not know is that the Black Panther, in retaliation, plans to do this and really kidnap him …

Nash Edgerton (brother of actor Joel Edgerton) ventured into film as a double of action for a wide spectrum of productions, such as the Matrix trilogy, three prequels of Star Wars, The Great Gatsby and Thieves of Fame (among many others). In 2008, the Australian took a leap into the industry and directed The Square, a neo-noir thriller based on a script by his brother Joel that garnered rave reviews. Ten years later Gringo arrives: Wanted alive or dead, a tape that in colloquial words works to catalog it simply as his second feature film. However, a closer look reveals the testimony of a person who has spent many years in the industry, observing and learning from all genres and understanding how they complement each other.

This is the fortress of Gringo, a film in which Edgerton manages to successfully convey the saturated thematic range of the screenplay of Anthony Tambakis and Matthew Stone in a film that organically amalgamates drama with action and dark comedy, with elements of suspense and twists of a thriller. This aspect is further highlighted by the personalities of each character and the performances of the protagonists, which include the performances of Charlize Theron and David Oyelowo. In Elaine, Theron gives life to a dangerous woman who combines the tricks of a classic femme fatale with the sharpness and power of a woman of the 21st century. Its sexual charge and cynicism make it dynamite on screen, however, we still manage to discover a vulnerable aspect in it. Harold is completely the opposite; a man of good intentions whose lack of character leads him to get into a predicament of catastrophic consequences. However, he is a lucky loser that we desperately want to see succeed, and who also contributes much of the comedy of the film. David Oyelowo (whom we are used to seeing in dramatic films) interprets this range of emotions in an empathetic and endearing way. His character also serves as a dose to counteract the explicit violence and rawness of the film.
